| Cheap award flights | by Katie Genter, Lead writer | | | I've seen some eye-watering award rates recently. However, there are still cheap award flights to be found. You can book select one-way economy award flights for as little as 3,500 miles. And in one case, you can even pay zero miles for your flight.
Let's start with the zero-miles option, which is sadly only bookable for a few more weeks. Until Aug. 20, you can use the United Airlines Excursionist perk to get a zero-mile one-way (stopover) award as part of a multicity ticket.
You can also find select flights for just a few thousand miles through airlines that use dynamic award pricing. For example, while writing this newsletter, I found the following options: - Intra-Hawaii Southwest Airlines flights starting at 3,500 points
- JetBlue TrueBlue awards starting at 3,500 points, including from Fort Lauderdale to Jamaica (beware the $50 taxes and fees on this route)
- Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan awards starting at 4,000 miles, including from Portland, Oregon, to San Francisco
- Delta Air Lines SkyMiles awards starting at 4,400 miles, including from Las Vegas to Los Angeles
- American Airlines AAdvantage awards starting at 5,000 miles, including from Cleveland to Philadelphia
If you prefer to fly to Europe, you can often find Virgin Atlantic Flying Club saver fares for award flights starting at 6,000 points. Although the taxes and fees are worth mentioning at $109, you still can't beat this award pricing across the pond.
So, if you think you don't have enough points or miles to book an award flight, think again.
