Share the miles, share the journey by Colin Hogan, Newsletter editor There's a very cool, underused service offered by some (but not all) airlines that makes miles redemptions more achievable, puts unused rewards to better use and gets your whole family (or framily) active in your points and miles game. I'm talking about pooling (or sharing) — the ability to combine miles across a group of people. A growing number of airlines are offering this service for free. Which is incredible, because it lets you: Reach redemptions more quickly Access miles for upgrades Consolidate scattered balances that would otherwise sit and devalue Ensure someone in the group maintains elite status Earn miles on your kids' flights … and more. Policies vary, and some airlines still only let you transfer miles for a fee. But U.S. airline programs like JetBlue TrueBlue, Frontier Miles and even United MileagePlus now have great options for shared earning and redeeming with few restrictions. And even more international carriers allow this. Just note: Every program has different rules, so make sure you read up on them. For instance, the brand-new Atmos Rewards program has an incredibly generous policy that lets you share points with up to 10 other people for free (the most of any program), but you need to be an Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® Credit Card holder. And there can be good work-arounds through your flexible currencies, too. For example, you'd pay a hefty fee to transfer 30,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles to someone else. But certain Citi credit card holders can freely share Citi ThankYou Rewards points — which now transfer at 1:1 ratio to AAdvantage — with each other.
