| | We all make mistakes | | by Tarah Chieffi, Senior writer | | | For better or worse, some of my most-read TPG stories have been the result of my own travel mistakes and mishaps. I'd like to believe it’s because you hope to learn from my errors and not so you can point and laugh (virtually, of course) at my lack of common sense.
Take my most recent predicament: While visiting Curacao, I'd put my phone in a waterproof case before snorkeling, but the case broke its promise to keep my phone dry while I took videos of tropical fish (pretty rude if you ask me).
I picked up a cheap phone just to let my family know I was alive — though saying I was "well" might've been a stretch. Still, I felt a lot better knowing my Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card's cellphone protection would cover repair or replacement costs once I got home.
Because I pay my monthly cellphone bill with that card, I get coverage that reimburses me for loss, theft and damage. In this case, I was able to get a brand-new iPhone. And because I was eligible for an upgrade through my mobile carrier, I actually got a newer model for no out-of-pocket cost.
This story had a happy ending, but I wasn't so lucky when I placed my laptop in an unfortunate position on the seatback tray and it was destroyed when the person in front of me reclined their seat.
Or when a simple mistake cost me more than $600 when I booked my first all-inclusive resort stay. (Trust me, it was one of those mistakes you only make once because you become almost too vigilant about it for future hotel bookings.)
As you can see, even frequent travelers aren't immune to making mistakes. Here are a few more cautionary tales: For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the benefits may be provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.
