| | Making smart business-class redemptions | | by Katie Genter, Lead writer | | | Are you dreaming about booking your next — or perhaps first — long-haul business-class award?
If you search through your favorite airline program, you may see one-way award rates in the six digits. But you can do better, especially if you have transferable rewards that can unlock some of the cheapest business-class awards.
I'm not talking about those unicorn awards that are seemingly impossible to find. Instead, I'm talking about good-value awards you can book if you have some schedule and routing flexibility.
For example, you could redeem as few as 29,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points to fly one-way between the U.S. and London. The taxes and fees are high at over $500 one-way for most U.S. departures, though, and you'll only find the absolute lowest rate on select dates.
Alternatively, you can redeem 45,000 Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards points to fly from select U.S. East Coast airports to Europe. Bilt Rewards is the only program that offers transfers to Atmos Rewards, though, and while taxes and fees are high on some routes, you'll also find some as low as $18 on some U.S. departures.
It's also worth paying attention to the monthly Air France-KLM Flying Blue Promo Rewards, as you'll sometimes find transatlantic business-class award deals on select routes.
And if you want to fly to Asia, you'll find Air Canada Aeroplan awards from the U.S. to Seoul, South Korea, or Taipei, Taiwan, starting at 75,000 points and $57 in taxes and fees on some dates.
Keep in mind that transfer bonuses can decrease the number of points you need to transfer to book an award.
