| | It's a terrible trend in travel … feeling like you are being nickel-and-dimed at every turn.
Want to check a bag? That will be $30 on average. Want a seat assignment? Well, that will cost you more, too, if you don't have elite status or hold the right credit card.
But now you can add a new one to the list: an upcharge to have a reclining seat in economy. This week, WestJet rolled out its plan to reconfigure 43 planes it purchased recently. Those planes will get a new premium cabin, but they’ll also have a beyond-basic section at the back with seats that don’t recline. This is rare among North American carriers — usually only a handful of seats (like in the emergency-exit rows) don't recline for safety reasons.
On some WestJet flights, you will soon have to pay for "premium" or "extended comfort" seats if you want to recline.
Reclining your seat is a controversial topic anyway, as we've covered in the past, and I am always nervous to open up my laptop to work on the tiny tray table after hearing what happened to my colleague, Tarah Chieffi, on one of her flights.
So, I'm curious — would you consider paying extra to get a seat that reclines?
