| | Yes, there are even 'lie-flat seats' in economy | | by Summer Hull, Senior director of content |
| | When you think about the coolest seats in the sky, you probably think of ones that are in business or first class, have closing doors, or even a whole suite or "apartment."
And you'd probably be right.
But since most of us don't always have the points budget for such things, I'm a big fan of seats in the sky that take the most important facet of those bougie seats (the lie-flat nature of it all) and offer it for economy-ish pricing.
Enter: underrated and under-the-radar but still technically lie-flat economy seat options.
I've flown on both Air New Zealand’s Skycouch and All Nippon Airways’ version of this, called the Couchii.
Air New Zealand's Skycouch, which allows you to book three economy seats, flips up an "extra seat piece" that can turn a regular economy row into a little lie-flat bed, complete with a special comforter and pillow.
See how this looked in practice on a 14-hour flight and how much it cost for me to book these for our family.
With ANA's Couchii from Honolulu to Tokyo, we had the option of booking clusters of three or even four (!) economy seats to transform them in a manner similar to Skycouch.
Potentially as early as next year, if the schedule holds this time (it has slipped a number of years already), there may be another interesting option in economy when Air New Zealand introduces Skynest.
Which, yes, will look like bunk beds, and could be priced in increments of four-hour naps.
If the interesting economy seats aren't for you, here are more ways to fly a bit more for a bit less:
