| | How points pros book American Airlines | | by Augusta Stone, Credit cards writer |
| | As a frequent American Airlines flyer, I'm always on the lookout for cheap award flights and sweet spots to maximize my miles.
The AAdvantage program is a fantastic choice for American loyalists, but did you know there's another — sometimes even better — way to book award tickets on American?
That's right. All the points pros are taking advantage of Atmos Rewards points to book American Airlines flights for less.
My favorite way to redeem Atmos Rewards points is for short-haul domestic flights on American. While AAdvantage offers great rates, there are plenty of times when Atmos Rewards delivers even better value.
For example, this year I could've booked a short-haul economy flight from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) for as few as 5,000 AAdvantage miles, but I snagged the same award seat for just 4,500 Atmos Rewards points.
Here are a few more examples I've found of cheaper American economy award availability through Atmos Rewards: - Miami International Airport (MIA) to Mexico City International Airport (MEX): 8,000 AAdvantage miles or 7,500 Atmos Rewards points
- Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL): 20,000 AAdvantage miles or 17,500 Atmos Rewards points
- Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Dublin Airport (DUB): 27,000 AAdvantage miles or 22,500 Atmos Rewards points
TPG has a step-by-step guide to walk you through booking American flights with Atmos Rewards points and finding the same award availability on your own.
