| | The best spots for an early spring getaway | | by Rachel Craft, Travel writer | | | With recent winter storms and flight cancellations still heavy on our mind, it's hard to believe spring is just around the corner. So if you're looking to get away, we have you covered with the best places to travel in March.
A tropical getaway may be the first thing that comes to mind this time of year. (Lounging at an all-inclusive resort in Belize after swimming with whale sharks? Yes, please.) But there are other warm-weather locales perfect for beating the winter blues, too.
Alternatively, you could embrace the cold with a trip to Anchorage to sample everything Alaska has to offer — culture, cuisine, wildlife and even the Iditarod in March.
Or book a ski trip somewhere snowy, like Deer Valley, Utah (it has a new ski resort that you can book with points). Points and miles can save you big bucks on a ski getaway, and skiing in Europe can save you even more.
Head to Taiwan for the Taipei Lantern Festival or Japan for hanami (cherry blossom watching). Award availability to Asia usually opens up after the Lunar New Year crowds die down. March brings with it several music festivals as well, like South by Southwest in Austin and Lollapalooza Argentina in Buenos Aires. The best credit cards for festivalgoers can save you money on tickets or give you access to exclusive experiences.
And let's not forget the rip-roaring craic (fun) of St. Patrick's Day in Ireland, which lasts through most of March. Aer Lingus' great offseason award rates and new direct flights from cities like Raleigh, North Carolina; Indianapolis; and Nashville make it easier than ever to get to the Emerald Isle on points.
