| | The best new rewards card has launched | | by Ben Smithson, Senior writer |
| | I've never flown Alaska Airlines. I don't even live in a city where the airline operates, and, honestly, I probably never will.
So why do I want this airline's brand-new Atmos™ Rewards Summit Visa Infinite® Credit Card? - A seriously strong welcome bonus: You can earn 100,000 bonus points and a 25,000-point Global Companion Award after spending $6,000 or more on purchases within the first 90 days from opening your account. Those 100,000 bonus points alone are enough for a round-trip, lie-flat business-class flight to Europe on partner airlines like Aer Lingus.
- The Global Companion Award is good on partner airlines: You get a 25,000-point Global Companion Award as part of the welcome bonus and on each card anniversary — and you can use it on dozens of partner airlines. (For example, putting it toward another Aer Lingus business-class redemption to bring a loved one with me on that trip.)
- Astonishing earning rates for global travelers: This card earns a jaw-dropping 3 points per dollar spent on all foreign transactions. As someone who regularly spends abroad, I've never seen such a generous earning rate for non-U.S. purchases.
- Atmos Rewards points are highly valuable: With low partner redemption rates — like domestic American Airlines flights from only 4,500 points or business-class flights to Japan on Japan Airlines from just 60,000 points — these are highly valuable (and otherwise hard-to-earn) rewards.
While it might seem odd to want a credit card offered by an airline I may never fly, this is hands down the most exciting new credit card I've seen launch this year, and is worthy of a look even if you're not a West Coast flyer.
