| | Curacao's crystal-clear waters are beautiful, but they can also be dangerous … well, if you are my last iPhone.
On a recent visit to the island, I headed straight for the beach after checking in to the Curacao Marriott Beach Resort (pictured above). I heard there was great snorkeling right there at the resort, and I just had to catch the hotel's aquatic inhabitants on video.
I snapped my phone into what I thought was a trusty waterproof phone case, but sadly ended up being my phone's demise.
When I emerged from my peaceful swim with my new fishy friends, the case was soaked through with water. By the time I woke up the next morning, my phone was fully inoperable.
After my initial panic subsided, I remembered that I pay my monthly mobile bill with a credit card that comes with cellphone protection. As soon as I returned to the States, I filed my claim.
In this case, I was able to upgrade to a newer model iPhone for no cost, other than taxes and fees. My insurance reimbursement more than covered what I owed on my current phone, so I essentially got the new phone for free just by paying my monthly bill with the right card. (Be sure to check your policy, though. Some coverage plans may leave you subject to a deductible.)
In fact, the card I use to pay my mobile bill is one of my favorite cards overall because it also comes with airport lounge access and an annual travel credit for flights and hotel stays.
There are several other cards that list cellphone protection as a perk. You may even have one in your wallet right now.
If you are ready to have one less worry when you travel, these stories will teach you more about credit card cellphone protection:
