Book these amazing stops by Sean Cudahy, Senior writer If you're already redeeming a big chunk of points and flying a long way, wouldn't you rather visit two destinations for the price of one? One of the best ways to get the most bang for your buck (or miles) is to book a stopover: a short stay in one city — on your way to another — without paying extra. Some of our favorites: Icelandair: When booking flights to Europe through Reykjavik, you can choose to spend a day (or a few) in Iceland instead of making a standard connection. (Added bonus: In the future, you should be able to earn Southwest Airlines points on these itineraries.) Turkish Airlines: You can score a free hotel night (or two, depending on your ticket) in Istanbul on your way to another city in Europe, Africa, Asia or beyond. TAP Air Portugal will let you spend up to 10 days in Portugal when passing through Lisbon or Porto without an extra airfare charge. And, you can spend some extra time in Panama City when passing through to South or Central America on Copa Airlines. You can also make stopovers in Dubai, Madrid and other cities, too. Be sure to check out our full guide. What about unofficial stopovers? I also am a big fan of what I like to call "unofficial" stopovers. As a regular American Airlines flyer, I frequently make London connections to British Airways. I'll often book a layover of just under 24 hours, allowing me almost a full day in London. You can be similarly crafty with other airlines and cities. My tip: When searching, look for the longest trip duration and see how the price and itinerary compare.
